A central atrium bisects the podium like a major artery, filling the space with life and activity. Residents, visitors and guests are welcomed through a dramatic four-storey open-air walkway, where walls of glass curve graciously on either side, supported by 40-foot stone columns. Vibrant shops and cafés inhabit the street-level spaces at Monde, casting a warm glow out onto the urban landscape of Sherbourne Common. “We’re making a building that respects the street,” Safdie reflects, “that animates the street, that fronts it with shops, that has a comfortable scale, that breaks into the podium and the towers… good urban design strategies to make the building feel comfortable in its setting.”
Above the podium, a tower rises to stunning effect. Safdie, intent on allowing nature resonate throughout the design, incorporates a commercial-grade glass curtain wall window system into the building’s architecture. This luxurious touch allows for expansive sections of windows, minimizing intrusive frames and maximizing natural light. “One of the qualities in an apartment is lots of transparency, lots of light,” notes Safdie. “Clear and white glass [create] a very sculptural reflective pattern that goes all the way up [the tower].”
His appreciation for light and space doesn’t end there. Generous outdoor balconies punctuate the building’s exterior. Staggered perpendicular from the building, each balcony is crowned by two storeys of open space, giving residents a place to breathe in the air and take in the spectacular views of the city and lake. True to his original vision, Safdie has created an architectural frame through which nature can be viewed and experienced in the home, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor life
